The Power of Mentoring

For a new student, a college or university can be an exciting but also intimidating place. College campuses can also be a lonely place for a new student, especially if that student is the first in their family to go to college, the child of immigrant parents, or a member of a diverse community. Even simple things that experienced students take for granted can be challenging for a new student, such as finding classrooms and offices on campus, understanding school policies for registration for classes, and learning the special language of the college such as “syllabus,” “office hours “transfer and “prerequisites.” Some new students find the answers by directly asking professors in their classes or talking to college professional staff. But many students find out information by asking friends, especially more experienced students.

L.I.T. Mentor Goals

Our Peer Mentor’s goals are to support their student mentees and increase their knowledge about resources which ultimately aid them to succeed at the University. They also act as part of our mentee’s support team and encourage first and second year students to engage in campus activities that maximize the mentees experience during their collegiate careers. Mentors not only assist our mentees transition into the university, but also embrace and acknowledge their identity while recognizing the importance of overcoming the many demands for one to successful pursue their academic and career goals.

Job Description

Peer Mentors must scholars passionate about  student success and mentorship. Mentors must also be mature, self-motivated, quick learners, able to work with minimum supervision and demonstrate the ability to take initiatives. Mentors should also exhibit excellent communication , facilitation and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to work with diverse identities and populations while maintain a hunger for social justice.

As a L.I.T. mentor, you will:

  • Meet with all assigned mentees for 30 minutes on a weekly basis
  • Facilitate bi-weekly program meetings as assigned and according to rotation during Monday free periods
  • Complete diversity and mentorship training
  • Promote and participate in the LGBTQ and Intercultural Resource Center’s events/programs. 
  • Guide students to campus resources.
  • Assist in recruiting and retaining college students.
  • Coordinate educational, diversity, social events and outings.
  • Participate in opportunities for public speaking.
  • Attend Fall and Spring training sessions. 
  • Establish and maintain weekly contacts with assigned students during the academic year.
  • Maintain individual student files and records that are accurate and up to date. 
  • Attend weekly staff mentoring meetings and one on ones.
  • Work 10 hour a week at the LGBTQ & Intercultural Resource Center
  • This entails fulfilling mentorship requirements
  • Aiding the office increase its visibility on campus
  • Aiding the Center achieve its Vision, Mission and Goals
  • Other assigned duties related to the growth and day to day operations of the Center
  • Attend 2 campus events monthly with assigned mentees (one event will be hosted by the LGBTQ and Intercultural Resource Center
  • Attend monthly program outings
  • Engage in endeavors that will increase their cultural and diversity competencies

Mentor Qualifications 

  • In order to be a peer mentor you must:
  • Be currently enrolled as a full-time Rutgers-Newark campus student.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity and empathy toward student concerns.
  • Be sophomore status or higher (30 units or more) as an undergraduate student at the time of application.
  • Have a minimum GPA of 2.5 cumulative.
  • Be able to work up to 10 hours per week.
  • Be available to work during the academic year (Fall 2016 and Spring 2017)
  • Be able to submit all required application information and materials.
  • Have a clean background record.

Training

Attend and successfully complete all designated program trainings
Complete and pass a van driver training course

Employment Dates

Fall Semester & Spring Semester 

Compensation

$1,000 stipend
